Flysurfer team riders garnered the brand lots of attention this year with their racing circuit competition wins and impressive freestyle videos. With a discipline-focused product offering for 2019 including the explosive new Soul kite, Flysurfer’s marketing and sales team gives us the scoop on what’s coming down the line and what changed for the new model year.

FLYSURFER TEAM RIDER OLLY BRIDGE HAS BEEN IMPRESSING RIDERS WORLDWIDE WITH HIS FREESTYLE FEATS ON YOUR NEW KITE, THE SOUL. TELL US WHERE THE SOUL FITS IN YOUR KITE LINE AND WHAT KIND OF RIDER AND CONDITIONS IT IS BEST SUITED FOR. ADDITIONALLY, ARE WIND RANGES COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF LEI KITES?

Olly simply shows what’s possible on a modern closed-cell foil kite. The sizes 6 and 8m are highly underestimated high wind kites and Mr. Bridge could become the first athlete on a foil kite to attend the prestigious King of the Air event. The Soul is our core product and has the biggest range of use and people are impressed by its hangtime, depower and usability.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT SOME OF THE DNA DEVELOPED FOR THE NEW SOUL KITE WAS ALSO INTEGRATED INTO FLYSURFER’S SONIC RACE VMG KITE. WHAT MAKES THIS KITE SO SPECIAL AND HOW IT DIFFERENT FROM THE SONIC RACE, SONIC 2, AND THE REST OF THE FLYSURFER FAMILY OF FOIL KITES?

The Sonic Race VMG reflects our brand’s spirit. We are closed-cell foil kite pioneers who live for designing the most advanced technology. Our aim is to build the fastest kite in the world, by achieving maximum efficiency.

The Sonic Race VMG is the kite you want for ‘Open Class’ racing; it’s the most efficient of all our closed-cell foil wings. During the 2018 competition season, riders with the VMG were on the podium at every big international kite racing event so you know we did something right with this design! The VMG’s 3-level (A-B-Z) bridle design dramatically reduces the number of lines and the associated air resistance with an incredible 30% reduction over other race kites.

The Sonic2, while sharing a similar name, is best for jumping on a foil or twin tip and the Sonic Race is our IKA registered kite.

THE BOOST3 IS YOUR NEWEST LEI KITE. HOW WOULD YOU DIRECT RIDERS IN CHOOSING BETWEEN THIS KITE AND THE STOKE?

Very simple. If you want to get the most versatile kite, fly a Boost3. It’s depowering range, upwind performance, relaunch and low-end are incredible and very impressive. Our Stoke is better for unhooking and wave riding as it is a more responsive and sporty kite.

FLYSURFER INTRODUCED THE RADICAL6 TWIN TIP TO THE MARKET THIS SUMMER. WHAT CHANGED ON THIS BOARD AND WHERE DOES IT FIT IN YOUR TWIN TIP OPTIONS?

The Radical6 has always been our bread and butter board. It’s so easy to get a lot of performance out of the Radical 6; it rides very fast but still gives a very comfortable feeling on the water. Its success is called simplicity.

FLYSURFER TEAM RIDERS HAVE BEEN KILLING IT ON THE OPEN HYDROFOIL RACING CIRCUIT THIS YEAR. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR SUCCESS, BESIDES RIDING GREAT GEAR?

A great team that is fully supported! If you are a Flysurfer athlete, then you can rely on the brand and your teammates. Our kite designer Benni Boelli used to race professionally for years and his heart and mind is still on the race course. That passion will never fade away.
