The 6th Annual Dream Extreme, the largest kiteboarding charity event of its kind in the country benefiting woman and children impacted by incarceration, kicked off last weekend and organizers couldn’t have asked for better weather. The unique extravaganza launched with a dynamic meet and greet on Friday night at an exclusive private estate in Watermill. The endless acres of beautifully landscaped property were an ideal setup for fire dancing, drumming, and sky lantern lighting under the illuminating full moon. Kiteboarding participants and coaches received their welcome bags and were paired together in preparation for the weekend ahead.  Some were new to the sport, while others were looking to try foilboarding for the first time, or dial in their strapless and freestyle skills.

Participants pulled up to the beach on Saturday morning and were met with sunny blue skies and northeast wind blowing in the 15-25 knot range which lasted throughout the entire day. Over 20 coaches from the US, Caribbean and Europe donated their time and skills and quickly got to work. In the midst of the kiteboarding clinics, attendees enjoyed other activities including massage, SUP, silk ribbon aerial instruction, a BBQ lunch and tasty treats throughout the afternoon.

After a full day of riding and progression, coaches and students alike traded in their wetsuits for evening wear as they prepared for the night’s festivities emceed by PIX-11 Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore. The gala included a gourmet dinner, silent auction featuring a lineup of luxury items, and dancing at the infamous Southampton Social Club. Hundreds of guests representing leaders in business, philanthropy, sports, fashion, and New York society gathered to support the cause.

Dream Extreme founder Linda Argila shared her personal story of incarceration and explained how the devastating separation from her 9-year-old daughter Ashley, also served as a catalyst to help others overcome challenges (see feature in the Spring 2015 issue of The Kiteboarder), then passed the mic to Johanna Flores, a recipient of the Hour Children programs.

Johanna continued to move the room as she thanked Sister Tesa Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the nonprofit organization, for helping her and thousands of other women reunite with their children””offering them hope and opportunities for a more productive future. Johanna, also a clinic participant, gave kudos to her coach Jeremy Lund, for pushing her on the water so that she fully experienced the feel of kiteboarding.

Sister Tesa took the stage apologizing to the group that the Pope couldn’t attend because he forgot his wetsuit, before further explaining the Hour Children name, and that the “HOUR” tells a story””working with children whose lives are governed by the hour of their mother’s arrest, the hour they visit in prison, and the more hopeful hour of reunification.
