There are many reasons to opt for a dedicated Wing foilboard to best enjoy your Wing surf foiling. Our experience on wing foiling shows that after using our SUP Foil we could quickly switch to smaller boards. The surf foil boards, on the other hand, have proved to be quite extreme. Therefore we felt the need for a new type of shape for wing surfing.
We have created a new range of wing boards with a wide range of volumes to make it possible for most riders to stand-up easily as well making sure that riding back to the shore is possible, even when the wind drops. Their dimensions and shapes are unique and specific to the practice. Using the foil actively to create your motion is one of the biggest thrills of wing surf foiling. Using some straight rocker lines for an easy take-off and a wide tail outline for an optimized volume distribution, the ROCKET WING boards feature a sharp beveled rail profile to make the release easier during take-off and the touch-down smoother when the board hits the water again. The ROCKET WING boards are equipped with a recessed handle for easy carrying, a full pad for comfort and with the twin track system on the bottom to connect with most foils on the market (4-bolt plate system). About this time last year, a fascinating thing happened. The kite industry released inflatable wings on the market, yet there wasn’t a dedicated board that was optimized for the new sport. If you wanted to be a first adopter, you had to buy a SUPfoil board or learn how to sinker waterstart a prone foilsurfing board. One option being too big and the other too small, F-One began working on solving the equation for the ideal wingsurfing board right away.
The Rocket Wing 5’10” is a dedicated board shape for wingsurfing with a thicker deck, wider template and chined rails specifically designed for the sport of wingsurfing. What does that mean? It offers you sufficient volume for learning with a smaller outline so that you can use that board for performance wingsurfing through intermediate and advanced skill levels. There are no inserts so you will be learning this sport strapless and the deck is nice and flat which we think is the best surface for control inputs to the foil. The Rocket Wing has a handle on the underbelly which is a critical feature for carrying both a larger volume board and your wing at the same time. It is attention to details like this that make these boards worth the splurge for beginners. The bottom features a foil mounting track with visual indicators that help you mount your foil in the same spot every time, and the tracks have a plug that prevents you from losing your hardware during disconnected transport. The Rocket Wing features a full deck pad which will be much easier on your knees.
At 90L, the 5’10” is the mid-sized board in the Rocket Wing line, but if that seems too small then you can move up to the 6’6″ Rocket Wing at 135L. We found that the 5’10” was an excellent platform for small to medium beginners. Less skilled and larger riders typically started out on a larger SUP, and after they got some muscle memory on a couple of runs and could manage the kneeling waterstarts, they then graduated to the 5’10”. While this might have been the fastest way to progress, most people may not have two boards at their disposal and the 5’10” would suffice as long as it is within the below suggested volume to rider weight range.
To determine actual rider size to board volume, take your weight in pounds and convert it to kilos. Beginners should add 40 to their kilo weight to get beginner volume, intermediates should add 10 to their kilo weight and advanced riders should minus 15 to their kilos. This formula works as a good guideline to guide you through volumes.
The main variables in board choice are personal skill/learning curve agility, weight and end-game aspirations. As you move down the Rocket Wing board sizes you get more surfing and pumping performance but if you go too small your waterstarts get more challenging and you may slow your progression. The most hyper-learning athletic individuals can learn on the 5’10” if the volume supports their weight with their first couple of sessions being a bit more wobbly. That said, it’s really tough to guide people through the board sizes, but to be sure, the Rocket Wing is a great platform with lightweight construction and well thought out features that will prove very valuable through the various stages of your new wingsurfing journey.
