What some may consider being the gold standard of production kitesurf boards, we tested the Mitu in Proflex construction matched to F-One’s newly offered medium-sized fins. Known for its super agile and reactive outline, the Mitu Pro Flex, in our hands, seemed to offer a slightly more user-friendly ride that floated through aggressive chop and felt more stable and predictable during aggressive riding.
The Mitu shape continues with its continuously rounded template terminating in a narrow swallow tail that sports a fair amount of rocker. The bottom shape starts with a double concave/rounded spine in the nose section that transitions into a single concave as you move through the mid-section and out through the tail. To the eye, it looks like the wide point has shifted forward just a little since the last time we tested this model, but the standout feature is the HD foam flex construction that gives you both a light and active ride that approaches the flickability of the carbon Mitu, but with the softer flex and absorption you get with the Pro Flex construction. Some of our Mitu sessions spanned typical California spring conditions with high wind, blow-out surf that puts a lot of chop and chaos in the water. With gusty wind and tossed-up wind swell, we were really impressed with how the Mitu smoothed out rough situations. When we set up a wave wrong or lucked into an angry gust while trying to cross a jumbled up rip current, the Mitu seemed at ease with a more dampened ride and better edge control. It’s almost as if the Mitu has taken on a slight nod from the F-One’s Shadow surfboard and morphed into a more forgiving version of a high-performance surfboard.
The Mitu is still a very reactive board, with its tail rocker and swallow tail the Mitu is very easy to initiate turns and carve just about any size wave from an ankle snapper to head high plus. You used to only get the Mitu’s with XS fins, but now you can upgrade to medium-sized fins for a little bit more hold. Even with the larger fins, the Mitu was willing to release and break loose in the lip, but you got a little more grip on hard and fast bottom turns which makes both progression and experienced riders that much better. For strapless airs, the Pro Flex construction is light enough that it sticks to your feet and levitates and the shape and swing weight allows you to mix some strapless freestyle in with your wave riding, most importantly, without sacrificing the latter.
For strapped riders, the Pro Flex comes with two forward/aft threaded inserts for your front foot and two for your back foot. The deck pad is a three-part pad featuring F-One’s new corduroy EVA that gives good traction, a little less plushness in feel but excellent feedback from the deck. The kick on the tail pad is generously sized so you’re back foot is safe from slipping off.
Overall, the Mitu continues to be a high-performance board that can deliver eye-opening performance in bigger waves while dicing it up for a good time on smaller mush burger days. With the Pro Flex you get a softer flex feeling at a reasonable weight and the new medium fins seem to stabilize the board with a little more grip and more predictable handling that will help us all be a better version of our kitesurfing selves.
