Local watersports guru Sammy Perez Hults was caught off-guard yesterday, May 26th, when he received a special kind of phone call; the one you don’t get everyday: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was on the island for the day, and wanted to squeeze in a kiteboarding session. Sammy’s day was full, but he scrambled to rearrange his schedule for the Secretary, and an hour later, he was greeted by members of the Secret Service at Kailua Beach Park to clear the location for safety hazards. Shortly thereafter, Kerry arrived and suited up for an ocean adventure. “It was a total surprise!” said Perez Hults, owner of Sammy’s Aloha Watersports, based out of Kailua. “But Secretary Kerry was a good rider, and impressed us locals with his skills. He was also a really nice guy on top of it.” Kerry, who has been kiteboarding for a few years and is a skilled athlete for his 72 years of age, was able to ride for over an hour before the wind died around five o’clock. He left the beach with a mention of his return and a big smile plastered across his face.
