We got the opportunity to test the FX kite while in Baja this winter. The FX is a great kite, which fills a niche the Switchblade (Cabrinha’s best selling kite), doesn’t necessarily cover. Riders who like the direct C-kite style steering and pull, but want the freeride/wave depower of a SLE/hybrid kite, will want to check out the FX. It felt like it had a ton of power and handled the high-end really well. We experienced this first-hand as midway through our session, we found ourselves completely goosed on the 9m.
The FX is extremely user-friendly in terms of jumping, offers highly responsive but predictable steering, and generates consistent power throughout its turns. Its excellent stability also allows it to completely loop with ease, and reach zenith for monster megaloops. When you unhook, the FX feels well mannered in its trim and steering with excellent slack, so it’s likely a great choice for those getting started with unhooked tricks. Additionally, the FX handled the middle of the window while wave riding in onshore/side-on wind with good drift, making it a good crossover for the guy that throws down with (load and pop freestyle, kite loops, and big air), but still wants something that works in the waves.
Overall, Tkb recommends this kite as a great freestyle/freeride combo for those that do a little of everything; some big air, kiteloops, casual unhooked freestyle and some wave riding. The steering response, its user-friendly big boosting and excellent slack for unhooking are stand out features, and in general, we immediately felt right at home on the FX and recommend you put it on the top of your demo list this spring.
