BRM CLOUD 2014 LIGHTWIND REVIEW

BOARD RIDING MAUI Cloud
Sizes Available: 5, 7, 9, 12, 14.5, 17m
Sizes Tested: 17m

Board Riding Maui Says:

The initial design objective was to address the blustery conditions common to Maui but it was immediately apparent that the concept also has amazing light wind potential. It’s a great joy to have gotten the feedback over the last year from around the world that the Cloud has extended options for more fun on the water for so many riders.

Small refinements were made in profiling for the C2. The big focus was to push the envelope even further on weight reduction. Without using a thinner bladder material even in the bigger sizes the challenge was to develop better support solutions via a new fixed bridle design to retain LE stability at greatly reduced LE diameters.

BRM CLOUD 2014 LIGHTWIND REVIEW

Our Testers Say:

“This is the ultimate park and ride kind of kite, it’s easy to fly and packs down small and light for hassle-free travel,” Clint Sterba.

“From the moment you jump on this kite you feel how powerful it is, but with that said it can take some time to find the sweet spot,” Ginnette Bufone.

“It’s lightweight canopy is felt in its steering and acceleration, sheeting feedback is bit ambiguous but once you figure it out, it screams upwind and can jump quite well when loaded and sent properly,” Brendan Richards.

TKB Says:

The Cloud is a medium to low aspect strutless kite which is now in its second generation of production. Inflating the 17m Cloud is astonishingly easy because of the absence of struts, the smaller diameter of the LE and the large inflation valve which universally fits any pump hose without the use of a nozzle. The Cloud 2 (C2) features a much improved inflation valve that won’t slip inside the LE, a redesigned shorter fixed front bridle which offers more attachment points along the leading edge compared to last year’s bridle. Testers found the overall lightweight construction of the Cloud gives it tremendous low-end power in the lightest conditions with good turning speeds. Turning response may be slow at first, but the lightweight canopy pivots quickly after the initial steering input. The Cloud doesn’t give precise sheeting feedback, so finding the sweetspot or proper tuning may challenge some riders at first, but the low-end power, impressive upwind ability and lively feel make this a fun and refreshing kite in extreme light air conditions.

At this time Board Riding Maui doesn’t sell a control bar with the Cloud. You must take an existing 4-line bar from another manufacturer and tune it so all lines are equal length when the bar is sheeted in.
