Tuesday, March 19th marks the start of the 2013 PKRA season in Dakhla, Morocco. Dakhla is one of the top kitesurfing destinations in the world; with a combination of wind, flat water, waves, amazing desert scenery and a very hospitable culture. The event, scheduled from March 19-24, is of this year’s 13-stop tour and will feature two disciplines:  freestyle kitesurfing and wave riding. The 2012 season found all riders (both men and women) pushing power moves with excellent execution. We’ll soon see how winter training has paid off, and we’re anxious to see who’ll claim the first competition. This week, riders have the chance to win $10,000 in prize money, along with the Dakhla trophy.

The 2012 PKRA season was one of the most exciting in the history of the tour with Youri Zoon and Alex Pastor battling for the world title until the last heat, while Karolina Winkowska upset Gisela Pulido and Bruna Kajiya to claim her first world title. We also saw creative new moves from Alberto Rondina with technical toe side handle passes. This year, up and coming riders like Christophe Tack, Eudazio Da Silva, and Stefan Spiessberger could start making waves.

There are a few critical changes in store for the 2013 tour. For starters, wave riding returns to the PKRA. The wave in Morocco is a perfect right-hand point break with the wind in a side, side-off direction. Excellent for executing the latest moves. The second change is a new freestyle judging format which gives riders more opportunities to score points with their favorite tricks, keeping the PKRA level of riding at its limits. Finally, new computer upgrades and software will allow everyone to follow the scores live on the internet, while providing riders valuable feedback on their performance.

The PKRA format rewards riders for innovation, and we expect  to see new tricks and variations of tricks in 2013. Will we see riders choose to explore old maneuvers or have new moves been perfected?  This is an event that highlights top riders and brings new contenders to the stage for a world title. The PKRA will deliver news live, in videos and photos, every day.
