EVENT REPORT: CKA San Diego, February 13, 2010
By Will Caldwell

CKA San Diego represents the first stop on the 2010 Collegiate Kiteboarding Association West Coast tour. Originating in Florida, USD, UCSB, and Cal Poly have started the first West Coast kite tour. I recently became the President of the USD kiteboarding this past January, and I have been planning this event since last October. I was pretty stoked to have my permit approved for the first kiteboarding contest ever in San Diego when a lot of people were doubting it could happen.

Although there was a lack of wind, a good-sized swell rolled in allowing for us to run a surf contest, which worked out to be a great plan. Surfers from all three schools definitely proved they were talented multi-sport athletes. Following the contest, he awards ceremony was held at the Wave House where competitors had the chance to ride the flow rider for 75% off. With the success of the event in San Diego, there will definitely be more contests for years to come.

With the completion of the first stop in San Diego, the tour now moves onto Santa Barbara for UCSB’s portion of the tour and then onto Pismo Beach for the CKA West Coast final hosted by Cal Poly. The CKA is still in its infancy, and with the growing popularity of the CKA it is going to turn out to be something really great for the sport of Kiteboarding.
