Skunked but Stoked in the Land of Left Point Breaks

I chose Peru for this holiday in October as my partner on the trip, Holt Alden, an aspiring kiter, was a surfer who is as stoked getting tubed now as he was 30 years ago as a teenager. I am goofy foot so the thought of experiencing the endless left point breaks that I have heard so much about had me excited to try out my recently conquered strapless board riding skills.... TKB Review: Spex Amphibian Eyeware

My first impression after opening the box was that they looked kind of goofy as they look like a combination of sunglasses and goggles. Once I adjusted the headband to fit my extra large head I was blown away with the colors of the water. The Spex I tested came with polarized gray (smoke) lenses. The frame fit my face nicely and was very comfortable, but they might be too big for smaller faces and children.... Read More...

Erin Swain: Kite Point Perfection

I dove the kite and was instantly lit. I raced across the water out into the sound trying my best to keep my form, but I don’t think I had ever been this powered up. It was scary and fun at the same time. I had some tacks upwind, but since I was traveling so fast, when I sat down to turn I would instantly lose ground (note to self: Must work on transition turns as soon as I can stay upwind). ... It was like a switch flipped when she arrived. The wind picked up A LOT. Tami brought her 9, and I ran back to get my 7 from my car. There were a lot of people at Jockey's Ridge that day, so we were the only ones kiting.... Read More...

Help the Coast Guard Help Kiteboarders

Just as a great Central California session was wrapping up earlier this spring, a few of us on the beach noticed a kite tumbling downwind outside the surf line. The kite's owner decided it would be too difficult to get the kite back and it continued its tumble downwind out of sight. A few hours later, I received a call from Coast Guard Lieutenant Ana Thorsson, who was coordinating the search for a kiteboarder they assumed was missing.... Read More...

Erin Swain: Walk of Shame

OK, so, I went kiting with Scott and Tami today. A quick back ground on Tami: we have been texting about kiting for an entire year, and have not gotten together. Today was finally the day we were able to go. It wasn’t too windy, so when I got he message from Scott saying he was heading down south, I jumped right on the invitation to kite and I invited Tami. ... Read More...
