OZONE ZEPHYR 2014 LIGHTWIND REVIEW

OZONE Zephyr
Sizes Available: 17m
Sizes Tested: 17m

Ozone Says:

The Zephyr was a ground breaking kite and without doubt it was the first light wind specific kite on the market that delivered both performance and handling, the likes of which had never been seen before on such a big kite. We are now proud to bring you the next generation Zephyr, which continues to set the standard for light wind riding. The all new Zephyr is a design that incorporates elements of the performance dominating Edge along with the ease of the previous Zephyr to fly and relaunch.

The new model has a crisp powerful feeling and a very direct positive bar feel, with instant power delivery compared to the previous model. The new planform, profile and sail tension help control the surfaces which gives the Zephyr a more cohesive feel. All these performance enhancements make it perfect for practicing new school moves or just cruising, kite loops are made easy and the boost is impressive while floaty.

OZONE ZEPHYR 2014 LIGHTWIND REVIEW

Our Testers Say:

“Super solid and stable, no flapping and fun to jump and ride with huge hangtime,” Jeff Quick.

“Flies a little farther back in the window compared to the Edge yet goes upwind well with relatively fast turning and nice bar pressure,” Clint Sterba.

“Great all around light wind kite, feels good, jumped well and goes upwind better than most,” Marko Bartscherer.

TKB Says:

The Zephyr is a 5-strut high aspect kite available only in the 17m size which Ozone heralds as their light wind freestyle weapon. The Zephyr uses a large diameter inflation valve that requires the bigger nozzle that comes standard with all pumps, making inflation and deflation quick and easy. The Zephyr features a double Ripstop trailing edge, a non-adjustable wingtip bridle, and a non-adjustable fixed front bridle which is medium in length. Testers commented on the Zephyr’s solid turning speed, medium to light bar pressure and impressive boost and hangtime performance. Compared to the Edge, the Zephyr is faster turning and slightly better in the boost and hangtime category and still goes upwind well. Overall, testers recommend the Zephyr for free riders who want an upwind machine kite that is slightly more freestyle oriented than the Edge in their light wind quiver.

OZONE ZEPHYR 2014 LIGHTWIND REVIEW

The Zephyr came with the Contact Control System which is a fixed length 55cm bar. This clean yet functional bar features a new push away quick release, plastic coated depower/throw line, single center-line safety depower, above bar depower cleat, and a hand operated quick release swivel. Testers liked the simplicity of the bar and attention to detail like the disappearing bar-end bungees. Some of our freeride testers thought the quick release required some extra finesse to reset in the water, but we think that could be resolved with greater familiarity with the mechanism.
